at Barneville-Carteret

Barneville-Carteret, a family sea resort, is a holiday place full of possibilities for those who like open spaces between sea and country-side.

It is exceptionally situated. The Carteret cape is the last of the large capes of the Cotentin, opposite the island of Jersey and the islets of the Ecrehou, which are only some twenty miles away.

From the tops of the cliff, at the foot of the light-house, you can see to the north sand dunes dotted with wild flowers. To the south stretches a long ribbon of golden sand beaches with some natural shelters for salt water birds and plants. And if you turn your back to the sea, you will see to the east a line of green hills with church steeples and wind-mills.

Our small town went through a revolution at the end of the 19th century. The sea bathing fashion transformed this humble fishing and coastal navigation port into a famous and lively sea-resort. In less than twenty years hotels and "villas" were built to accommodate the holiday makers coming from Paris by train.

Whereas in 1900, it took a whole day to come here, nowadays you only need a few hours by car. The fact that holidays were gradually granted to everybody also contributed to the development of our resort. Recently the fishing and commercial port has been enlarged and modernized. A marina of 330 berths was realized bordered by gardens that are a favourite place for walks all year-round.

Barneville-Carteret has changed a lot in the last century without losing any of its charm. We have kept the scenery of the old sea-resort while protecting, our natural environment from urbanization.

Each year, Barneville-Carteret is granted the "European Blue Flag" for the quality of its beaches and its sailing harbour ; this in acknowledgment of its beaches and environment quality.
