A saltmarch bordered by three villages

The Barneville saltmarch is at the very heart of our town. It breathes to the rhythm of the tides and becomes a lake when the sea comes in. Our three villages border it.

Carteret, at the entrance of the access channel, is a fishing and sailing harbour offering safe shelter to fishermen and teams of sailing boat, plying along the harbours of the Manche, Brittany and the Anglo Norman islands. Sea links make these islands accessible from Easter to October. The sea-side part, built on the cape at the beginning of the sea bathing fashion has kept its look from 1900 with its hotels, houses and parks.

Barneville market town, built on the crest of a hill according to a map dating from the Middle-age, stretches on both sides of its Roman fortified church which permitted surveillance of the coasts. Main shops and services are found there and the village center is specially animated on Saturday morning which is market day. Everything is available there : fish and shell-fish, flowers, fruit, vegetables, tremendous variety of tasty country cheeses ; it is a special treat to try a loaf of country bread or a rhubarb tart topped with meringue. Not to mention the irresistible smell of grilled lamb that whets our appetite.

Barneville-beach, a holiday place, stretches between the "havre" and its long sandy beach. A place for marvellous afternoons where families meet and make holiday friends. At low tide, one can sometimes reach the rock of Barneville with the children. What a lovely way to spend a summer afternoon ! We tell them the magnificent fishing results we used to have which never rally happened, while our children pick up black winkles, a few shrimps and two small crabs !
